Tragic Journey: Four Pakistanis Die Attempting to Reach Spain

In a tragic incident, four Pakistani nationals lost their lives while trying to illegally travel to Spain. The individuals, who hid in a ship’s cargo, reportedly died from suffocation in Mauritania. Among the deceased was Abu Huraira, a resident of Wazirabad’s Jinnah Colony. His family revealed that he left for Spain a month ago, facilitated by an agent named Usman.

This incident is part of a broader issue of dangerous migration attempts. Recently, a boat carrying migrants capsized near Spain’s Canary Islands, resulting in nine deaths and 48 missing. The boat had 84 people on board, and 27 were rescued after a distress call was made.

The Atlantic route to Europe is notoriously deadly, with overcrowded and poorly equipped boats facing strong ocean currents. Thousands have died on this route in recent years. Spain’s Prime Minister has visited Mauritania and The Gambia to sign agreements aimed at cracking down on smugglers and expanding legal immigration pathways.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 4,857 people have died on this route since 2014, though NGOs suggest the actual number is much higher.
