Tragic Ice Cave Collapse in Iceland: One Dead, Two Injured

A tragic incident occurred at the Breidamerkurjokull glacier in southern Iceland, where an ice cave partially collapsed while a group of tourists was visiting. One person died at the scene, and two others were seriously injured, with one being airlifted to a hospital in Reykjavik.

Rescue Efforts

According to Sudurland police, four people were trapped under the ice. Two have been rescued and are seriously injured, while the search continues for the remaining two. Rescue teams, including three helicopters from the Icelandic Coast Guard and the Danish Navy, are involved in the search. Due to the rugged terrain, large icebreaking machines could not be used, and handheld tools were employed instead. The operation was paused after nightfall and will resume on Monday morning.

Details of the Incident

The collapse occurred near the glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon, a popular tourist destination. The incident happened at 3 pm on Sunday when four out of a group of 25 tourists and their tour guide were hit by falling ice. The collapse is not believed to be related to a volcanic eruption that occurred 300 kilometers away in southern Iceland on Friday.
