In Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, a hooch tragedy has claimed 59 lives. The victims were treated at various hospitals, including Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College in Salem, and others.

Details of the Incident

As of Tuesday, 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, 20 at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem, four at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital, and three at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry. A total of 111 persons are undergoing treatment at Kallakurichi Government Medical College hospital, 11 in Puducherry, 30 in Salem district, and four in Villupuram district. One person is being treated at Royapetta Hospital in Chennai.

Political Reactions

AIADMK leader D Jayakumar criticized the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for not transferring the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He alleged that many top leaders were involved, which is why the case was not transferred. Jayakumar also accused the DMK government of failing to maintain law and order and highlighted the lack of proper medicines to treat the affected patients. AIADMK held a protest in Chennai, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister MK Stalin.
