63 Dead, 78 Hospitalized

In Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, a hooch tragedy has claimed 63 lives as of Thursday morning, according to the District Collectorate. Currently, 78 people are undergoing treatment across various hospitals in the state. Out of these, 48 are admitted to the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, and 66 have been discharged from the same hospital.

In other regions, 9 people are being treated in Puducherry, 18 in Salem District, 1 in Royapetta Hospital Chennai, and 2 in Villupuram District. A total of 88 people have been discharged across Tamil Nadu.

On Wednesday, National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Chairman Kishor Makwana met the families of the victims in the Karunapuram area. He criticized the Tamil Nadu government for not taking action against the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor. He offered his condolences and prayed for the speedy recovery of those still undergoing treatment.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and the Director-General of state police, seeking a detailed report on the incident within a week. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken notice and sent a three-member inquiry committee, led by NCW Member Khushbu Sundar, to investigate the matter and meet the families of the deceased.

The total number of people affected by the consumption of illicit liquor has now increased to 229.
