Tragic Fire at Jhansi Medical College
A devastating fire at the Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has claimed the lives of ten newborns. The fire, believed to have started due to a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator, spread rapidly in the NICU, where over 50 infants were being treated.
Government Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as “heart-wrenching.” He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The Prime Minister assured that relief efforts are ongoing under the supervision of the Uttar Pradesh government.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also announced Rs 5 lakh assistance to the parents of the deceased newborns and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He has ordered a report on the incident within 12 hours.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, calling the tragedy “heartbreaking.” Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the state government for negligence, while Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed their grief and demanded accountability.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak mentioned that DNA tests might be conducted to identify three of the ten deceased newborns. Seven have been identified, and several others sustained injuries.
