A devastating fire broke out in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the loss of at least 10 newborn babies’ lives. The fire, caused by an electrical short circuit, also injured 16 babies, while 37 were rescued. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken notice of this tragic incident, describing it as a grave violation of human rights due to negligence.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, demanding a detailed report on the incident within a week. This report should include the status of the FIR, actions against responsible officials, medical treatment for the injured, and any compensation provided to the affected families. The Commission also seeks information on preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of each deceased infant and Rs. 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and announced Rs. 5 lakh for the parents of the deceased newborns. He has instructed local authorities to submit a report on the incident within 12 hours and pledged Rs. 50,000 for the injured from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
