Tomato Prices Soar in Indore Due to Heavy Rainfall

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, tomato prices have surged, with retail prices exceeding Rs 120 per kilogram. This increase is attributed to a low supply from Maharashtra, as explained by Mohammad Salim Chaudhary, a trader at the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Choithram Mandi. Heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh has damaged local tomato crops, causing a decrease in production. Initially, tomatoes were priced at Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kilogram in the wholesale market, but prices have now risen to Rs 80 per kilogram. In retail, they are being sold for Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kilogram.

Chaudhary mentioned that the supply of tomatoes is low, and if local crops do not improve, prices may continue to rise. Onion prices have also increased, with high-quality onions from Nashik, Maharashtra, being sold for Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kilogram. Previously, onions were priced at Rs 15 per kilogram, but now they have reached Rs 40 in the wholesale market and Rs 60 to Rs 80 in retail.

Retailers have observed that consumers, who once bought 2 kilograms of tomatoes, are now purchasing only half a kilogram due to the price hike. The increase in tomato prices is affecting sales during the festive season.
