TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee Calls for Quick Justice in Rape Cases After Doctor’s Tragic Death
South 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], August 10: Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has called for the introduction of an ordinance or bill to ensure the completion of rape trials within 7 days. This demand follows the tragic death of a female post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Banerjee emphasized that the issue should not be politicized and urged for quick justice. He stated, “The politicisation of this issue should not be done. I saw many political parties come out on the streets. We should instead bring an ordinance or a bill so that there can be quick justice in 7 days. The protesting BJP leaders should bring a bill to punish rapists in 7 days and as the opposition, the job of TMC and Congress is to support the bill. Why will the trial take 5-6 years? A mother and father lost their daughter.”
He also mentioned that the West Bengal government is taking the incident seriously, with an accused arrested within 24 hours. “This incident is extremely heinous, the state government is taking this matter seriously and within 24 hours an accused has been arrested…There is no identity of a rapist whether he is a policeman, an engineer, a labourer, or anything else. The accused is just a murderer and has no right to stay in society,” Banerjee added.
Meanwhile, doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi held a protest in support of the deceased doctor, demanding a CBI inquiry. They carried posters and chanted slogans like “We want a CBI inquiry.”
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, have also demanded a CBI investigation into the incident. Paul stated, “The condition in which her body was found–completely naked with bruises–suggests she was raped and then murdered. We demand a CBI investigation. A postmortem should not be conducted after evening, yet it was done here. If the postmortem is carried out under the state system, the truth will be buried.”
