Tibetan Advocates Speak Out on Language Suppression at UN Event in Geneva
In Geneva, Tibetans and their supporters highlighted China’s suppression of the Tibetan language at a United Nations Human Rights Council side event. The event, hosted by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, was moderated by Kai Mueller from the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT). Key speakers included Palmo Tenzin from ICT, Tenzin Choekyi from Tibet Watch, and Gloria Montgomery from the Tibet Justice Center.
Tenzin Choekyi discussed the history of Tibetan protests for language rights and the severe consequences faced by advocates. Palmo Tenzin emphasized the oppressive environment in Tibet and the impact of educational policies on the Tibetan language and culture. Gloria Montgomery highlighted China’s obligations under international law to provide education in the Tibetan language.
China attended the panel but denied the validity of the testimonies, reflecting a reluctance to engage with the issues raised. Tencho Gyatso, President of ICT, praised the advocates for illustrating the harsh realities in Tibet and called for China to acknowledge Tibetans’ rights to their language and heritage.
The event was significant, following an appeal from 100 Tibetan and Himalayan scholars to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urging an end to forced assimilation policies in Tibet.
