Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 19: Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested three people in connection with the alleged rape of a nurse by a doctor at a private hospital in Moradabad district. The incident was reported on August 18.

Details of the Incident

Moradabad Rural SP Sandeep Kumar Meena stated that a complaint was received on August 18. The complainant reported that his daughter was raped by the doctor of the clinic where she worked. The accused have been identified as Dr. Shahnawaz, Junaid, and Mehnawaz. A case has been registered against them under various sections of the BNS and SC/ST Act. All three have been arrested, and the hospital has been seized.

Nationwide Protests by Doctors

This incident comes amid nationwide protests by doctors following the assault and murder of a female PG-trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal. Resident doctors from Northern Railway Central Hospital protested in Delhi, demanding justice and safety audits in workplaces. Similarly, doctors in Mumbai staged a protest at Azad Maidan.

Dr. Prerna Gomes from Jaslok Hospital emphasized the need for safety audits, stating, “We request the government to ensure that every organization has a safety audit. What is the point of our independence if we are not safe?”

Government and Judicial Response

71 Padma awardee doctors wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the recent incidents and requesting immediate intervention. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear the case on August 20. The Central Bureau of Investigation is also looking into the incident that occurred on August 9.
