Terror Attacks in Balochistan: Over 70 Killed, Including Soldiers and Civilians
In Balochistan, Pakistan, over 70 people have lost their lives in a series of terror attacks. The military reported that 14 soldiers and police officers were killed, while 21 terrorists died in a major attack on vehicles in Bela, Lasbela district.
In Musakhel district, attackers stopped a convoy, checked IDs, and killed 23 civilians from Punjab. They also set 35 vehicles on fire. In Kalat, 10 people, including five police officers and five civilians, were killed in an attack on a police post and a highway.
Rail traffic with Quetta was suspended after blasts on a rail bridge in Bolan, affecting connections to the rest of Pakistan and Iran. Six unidentified bodies were found near the attack site.
Balochistan has faced a long-standing rebellion with several armed groups. Rights groups criticize Pakistan’s response, citing enforced disappearances and state repression. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating they targeted military personnel in civilian clothes. However, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry said the victims were innocent citizens.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the Musakhel attack as “barbaric” and vowed to bring the attackers to justice. Punjab government spokesperson Uzma Bukhari and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also called for increased efforts to eliminate BLA terrorists.
Local media reported that 12 rebel fighters were killed by security forces in the past 24 hours. The BLA has claimed responsibility for similar attacks in the past, including the killing of seven barbers in Gwadar in May and several people abducted from a highway in April.
