Community Clashes During Durga Idol Immersion
In Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, security remains tight following violence that erupted after a man was killed during a Durga idol immersion procession in Mahasi locality. Shops and businesses are closed as police have detained 30 individuals involved in the unrest.
The incident occurred on October 13, when a clash between two communities led to the shooting of a man in Mahasi’s Maharajganj area. Protestors set fire to shops and properties, prompting police to use lathicharge and tear gas to control the situation.

Opposition leaders criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for its handling of the situation. Congress President Ajay Rai accused the government of failing to stop the violence and harassing a community. IUML MP ET Muhammed Basheer expressed concern over the government’s inability to control such incidents, calling for a comprehensive inquiry.
Police Response
Bahraich Superintendent of Police, Vrinda Shukla, explained that the violence began when a procession passed through a Muslim area, leading to an argument and the subsequent shooting of a Hindu community member. The police have launched a search for the main accused.
