Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia Announces New Telecom Act and 6G Plans at India Mobile Congress 2024
New Delhi, India – Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the government will notify the rules of the new Telecom Act within the next 180 days. This announcement was made during the launch of the theme for India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024.
Scindia emphasized the importance of having a robust system to protect the country, its citizens, and businesses. He stated, “We have notified the new Indian Telecom Act, and within 180 days, we will have each and every rule notified so that all of you can walk down that path with complete confidence that the government stands by your side.”
The new Telecom Act aims to amend and consolidate laws related to the development, expansion, and operation of telecommunication services and networks. Some provisions of the act, such as the government’s ability to take control of telecom services for security or public order, have already become law.
Scindia also highlighted the rapid rollout of 5G technology and the commitment towards 6G. He mentioned that the government is working on 127 global patents and setting up 100 5G case labs. The production of telecom equipment has also seen significant success, with investments, sales, exports, and job creation contributing to the idea of Atmnirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Regarding BSNL’s 4G services, Scindia announced the formation of a performance management unit (PMU) to set daily targets for the launch. He praised BSNL for developing its own 4G technology instead of adopting existing ones.
On the topic of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), Scindia assured that its operations would be transferred to BSNL, and asset monetization would be used to pay off liabilities, ensuring no defaults.
