Bridgetown [Barbados], June 20, 2024: Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, is taking the field against Afghanistan in the Super Eights match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The team is wearing black armbands in memory of former India fast bowler David Johnson, who passed away on Thursday.

David Johnson was a right-arm fast bowler who played in two Test matches for Team India in 1996, taking three wickets. In his first-class cricket career, he took 125 wickets with a strike rate of 47.4 and an average of 28.63 in 39 games. Despite being a lower-order batsman, he scored a century in first-class cricket and took 41 wickets in 33 List A matches. He played his final competitive match in the Karnataka Premier League in 2015.

In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, India ended their group stage with three wins in three matches against Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA in Group A, while their last game against Canada ended in a washout. Afghanistan ended the group stage in second place in Group C, with three wins and a loss to West Indies.

India aims to register big wins in the Super Eights to qualify for the semifinals and end their ICC trophy drought since the 2013 Champions Trophy and win their first T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition in 2007 in South Africa.
