Team India Wears Black Armbands to Honor Aunshuman Gaekwad in ODI Against Sri Lanka

On August 2, Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, played against Sri Lanka in the first ODI match of the series. The team wore black armbands to honor former India cricketer Aunshuman Gaekwad, who passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with lung cancer.

Gaekwad, who was in London until last month, passed away in Vadodara. He served as the coach of India twice, first in October 1997 and then in 2000. Under his coaching, Anil Kumble took all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999. Gaekwad also played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India from 1975 to 1987, scoring 1,985 runs in Tests with a highest score of 201 against Pakistan.

India’s tour of Sri Lanka began on July 27 with a T20I series, where India won all three matches. Rohit Sharma returned to lead the team after a memorable win against South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup final on June 29.
