Tea Production Drops in Assam and West Bengal Due to Weather and Pests
Tea production in India has significantly declined in 2024, with Assam experiencing an 11% drop and West Bengal a 21% decline up to July. The Tea Association of India attributes this to insufficient rainfall, excessive heat, and later excessive rainfall, along with pest infestations.
The association highlighted that the situation could lead to further crop losses in the coming months. Reports indicate that West Bengal is about 10% behind in production, while Assam estates are lagging by around 3% for August 2024 compared to last year.
The industry faces financial pressures due to rising costs and delayed subsidies, prompting calls for government support. Despite a 13% rise in North Indian tea prices, it hasn’t offset the production shortfall. North Bengal’s 21% crop loss resulted in only a 7% price rise, while Assam saw a 15% price increase despite an 11% production drop.
Sandeep Singhania, President of the Tea Association of India, emphasized the need for government support, especially in handling escalating food grain prices.
