Tata Group’s N Chandrasekaran and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Launch Rs 27,000 Crore Semiconductor Unit
New Delhi [India], August 3: The semiconductor industry is set to become a cornerstone of the future, with chips playing a crucial role in daily life, according to Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran. On Saturday, he spoke after the ‘bhoomi pujan’ ceremony for Tata’s new semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, which will be established with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore.
Chandrasekaran expressed confidence that part of the facilities will be completed by 2025, with operations starting soon after. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the ‘bhoomi pujan’ in Jagiroad alongside Chandrasekaran. The unit is expected to create 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs.
Chandrasekaran highlighted the importance of the semiconductor industry, stating, “Chips are going to be part of everything we do in our daily lives, industrial life, and consumer lives.” He emphasized the rapid progress of this technology, especially with the adoption of artificial intelligence.
He also noted that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has taken a bold step into this space. Tata Group is building the entire electronics value chain, with facilities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, and now Assam.
Chandrasekaran mentioned that the Assam facility will create a semiconductor ecosystem, attracting various companies to set up units in the region. He envisions a thriving electronics hub developing in Assam.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the unit is expected to be completed within 18 months. He thanked Prime Minister Modi and others for choosing Assam for this significant project.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw added that the plant will manufacture about 4.83 crore chips per day, with all major technologies developed in India. These chips will be used in electric vehicles and communication infrastructure.
Officials noted that the Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India was launched in December 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. The Union Cabinet approved Tata’s semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, and two other units in February this year.
The Assam unit will focus on advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, crucial for applications in automotive, communications, and network infrastructure. Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, will build the facility.
