The Union Ministry of Home Affairs in India has extended the residence permit of Taslima Nasreen, an exiled Bangladeshi author. Background on Taslima Nasreen
Nasreen is known for her outspoken criticism of religious extremism and advocacy for women’s rights. She has been in exile since 1994 due to threats from Islamist fundamentalists in Bangladesh. Her works, such as ‘Lajja’ and ‘Amar Meyebela’, have been banned in Bangladesh for challenging communalism and gender inequality. ‘Lajja’ sparked controversy for its depiction of violence against Bengali Hindus after the Babri Masjid demolition in India.
Over the years, Nasreen has lived in various countries, including Sweden, Germany, France, and the US. She moved to Kolkata, India, in 2004 but relocated to Delhi in 2007 following an assassination attempt. After a period of house arrest, she left India in 2008, returning several years later.
