Taranjit Singh Sandhu Talks About Strong India-US Ties and Upcoming US Elections

Washington, DC [US], July 22: Taranjit Singh Sandhu, India’s former ambassador to the United States and a BJP leader, has shared insights on the robust relationship between India and the US. He emphasized that both countries are mature enough to handle trade issues and that the personal chemistry between leaders will continue to benefit bilateral ties.

Sandhu highlighted that India has experience working with both Democratic and Republican administrations, ensuring that the relationship remains strong regardless of the US presidential election outcome in November. He noted, “The good part is that we (India) have dealt with both (Democrats and Republicans)…So, the personal chemistry should not be a problem. US and India’s relationship is robust.”

Over the past 15 years, India-US relations have evolved into a comprehensive global strategic partnership, driven by shared democratic values and common interests. Regular dialogues and visits by leaders from both countries have further strengthened these ties. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in 2023, GE Aerospace signed an MoU with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce fighter jet engines for India’s Light Combat Aircraft.

As the US presidential elections approach, President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Sandhu commented on the political landscape, stating that the current situation appears to favor Donald Trump, but the outcome will depend on six key swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Sandhu recalled Trump’s successful visit to India in 2020 and mentioned Prime Minister Modi’s positive interactions with Vice President Harris, including a state visit in 2023. He also emphasized the significant role Indian-Americans will play in the upcoming elections, noting their bipartisan approach.

On Vice President Harris’s candidacy, Sandhu pointed out three key aspects: her position as the sitting Vice President, her gender, and her African-American heritage. He believes these factors make her a strong contender within the Democratic Party. President Biden’s endorsement of Harris followed his decision to withdraw from the race, citing the best interests of the party and the nation.
