Coach Tapan Panigrahi’s Optimism
Tapan Panigrahi, a renowned swimming coach and recipient of the Dronacharya Award, believes India is on the brink of winning an Olympic medal in swimming. Indian swimmers have been making waves in national and international competitions, with a notable medal haul at the Asian Games, including one gold, two silver, and six bronze medals.
Progress in Recent Years
India’s potential in swimming became evident when Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj qualified directly for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a first for Indian swimmers. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, 14-year-old Dhinidhi Desinghu impressed by topping Heat 1 in the women’s 200m freestyle, although she did not advance further. Desinghu, from Bengaluru, holds the national record in this event.

Panigrahi credits the Swimming Federation of India and the Sports Authority of India for their efforts in nurturing talent. He highlights the importance of foreign coaches and training camps. Panigrahi is confident that India will soon be a strong contender for Olympic medals, emphasizing the importance of improving timings by fractions of a second.
