Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 22: Tamil Nadu minister S. Regupathy addressed the tragic Kallakurichi hooch incident, which has claimed 53 lives. He criticized the opposition, led by AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami, for politicizing the tragedy.

Government’s Response

Regupathy mentioned that Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered both a CB-CID and a judicial inquiry. Retired Judge Justice Gokuldas has been appointed to lead the investigation and will submit a report within three months.

Opposition’s Actions

Despite the government’s efforts, the opposition has been vocal. AIADMK leaders, dressed in black, staged a walkout and demanded CM Stalin’s resignation. They also held a press conference to criticize the government’s handling of the situation.

Current Situation

Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth reported that out of 193 people who consumed the illicit liquor, 140 are currently safe, while some are on ventilators. The government has announced financial aid for the victims’ families and those undergoing treatment.
