In Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, a tragic incident involving illicit liquor has resulted in the deaths of 58 people. According to the District Collectorate, 156 individuals are currently receiving treatment in various government hospitals across the state.

Details of the Incident

A total of 110 people are being treated at the Kallakurichi Government Medical College hospital, 12 in Puducherry, 20 in Salem, and 4 in Viluppuram government hospital. The Kallakurichi District Magistrate reported that seven people, including five men and two women, have been discharged after treatment.

Government Response

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state government will cover the education and hostel expenses of children who lost one or both parents in the tragedy. Children who lost both parents will receive Rs 5000 monthly assistance until they turn 18, and Rs 5 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit in their names. For children who lost one parent, Rs 3 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit. Priority will be given to these children in all government welfare schemes.

Investigation

The CB-CID of Tamil Nadu police, led by SP Shantharam, has begun investigating the tragedy. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident, according to the Kallakurichi Collector.
