Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin Urges Release of Fishermen from Sri Lankan Custody

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, requesting action to secure the release of over a hundred fishermen and their boats detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. CM Stalin expressed concern over the increasing incidents, which are distressing fishermen’s families and affecting their livelihoods.

In his letter, CM Stalin urged the EAM to engage in diplomatic efforts with Sri Lanka to resolve the issue. He requested the release of 128 fishermen and 199 fishing boats from Tamil Nadu currently held by Sri Lanka. He highlighted the ongoing nature of these incidents, which are making it difficult for coastal communities to sustain their way of life.

CM Stalin noted that the Sri Lankan Navy recently apprehended 16 Indian fishermen from Rameshwaram along with their two mechanized fishing boats. He emphasized that such incidents are on the rise, causing distress and hampering the livelihoods of coastal families.

The Tamil Nadu government has consistently raised concerns over the repeated arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities, a longstanding issue between the two nations. CM Stalin expressed hope that discussions of the Joint Working Group would help find a lasting solution to this issue.
