Chennai, Tamil Nadu – Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Piyush Goyal for the decision to ban the import of parts for pocket cigarette lighters. This move is seen as a significant step in protecting jobs in the matchbox industry and reducing plastic waste.

Support for Matchbox Industry

In a social media post, CM Stalin thanked Minister Goyal for accepting his demands to ban single-use plastic cigarette lighters priced under Rs20 and restrict the import of lighter parts. He emphasized that this decision will strengthen Tamil Nadu’s matchbox manufacturers, safeguarding over 100,000 jobs and reducing harmful plastic waste.

Government Action

On October 13, the Department of Commerce imposed restrictions on importing parts for pocket lighters. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced that the import of parts for gas-fueled, non-refillable or refillable lighters is now restricted.

Challenges for the Industry

CM Stalin also shared a letter he sent to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, highlighting the challenges faced by the matchbox industry in Tamil Nadu. The industry, a major employment source in the region, is struggling due to competition from Pakistan and Indonesia and supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID pandemic.

He urged the minister to take strict action against the import of lighters from these countries to protect the local industry.
