Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin Forms Committee to Amend New Criminal Laws

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 8: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has established a one-man committee to review and recommend amendments to three new criminal laws enacted by the Government of India. The committee, led by retired Justice M Satyanarayan, will also consider renaming the laws in Hindi.

In a post on X, CM Stalin expressed concerns about the lack of state consultation in the implementation of these laws, which has led to protests. He stated, “They have implemented new criminal laws without hearing the views of the states and holding debates in Parliament, which has led to various protests across the country. The DMK and the Tamil Nadu government continue to oppose this.”

The new criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita, came into effect on July 1. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal highlighted that these laws will enhance the quality of life for Indian citizens by expediting justice delivery and aiding societal progress. The laws aim to replace the Indian Penal Code of 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.
