Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin Condemns Hindi Month Celebrations in Chennai

On October 18, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his concerns over the celebration of Hindi Month in Chennai, coinciding with the Golden Jubilee of Chennai Doordarshan. He criticized the event, stating that it undermines linguistic diversity in India, a country with over 1700 languages. Stalin emphasized that the Indian Constitution does not recognize any national language, and Hindi and English are only for official purposes.

Stalin suggested that Hindi-oriented events should be avoided in non-Hindi-speaking states, advocating for the celebration of local languages instead. He wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the cancellation of the Hindi Month closing ceremony at Chennai Television Station. Stalin proposed that if Hindi Month is celebrated, similar recognition should be given to Tamil and other classical languages.

He highlighted that Tamil, recognized as a classical language in 2004, deserves its own day of celebration. Stalin’s stance was supported by Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss, who also criticized the Hindi Month celebrations as an imposition of Hindi.
