In Chennai, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai criticized the DMK government for failing to ensure safety during the Indian Air Force’s 92nd Inauguration Day celebrations. An air show at Marina Beach resulted in five deaths and over 200 injuries due to heatstroke. Annamalai blamed the DMK government for inadequate safety and transport arrangements, calling it a “complete failure of administration.” He condemned Chief Minister MK Stalin for prioritizing personal promotions over public safety.
State Secretary SG Surya echoed these sentiments, highlighting the government’s lack of preparation despite knowing the event’s scale. He noted the absence of basic amenities like water and medical facilities, contrasting it with the attention given to a recent car race event. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami also expressed condolences and criticized the government’s coordination efforts.
The air show, featuring aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Sarang helicopter, was part of the IAF’s celebrations themed ‘Bharatiya Vayusena: Saksham, Sashakt aur Aatmnirbhar.’ Despite the tragedy, the event marked a significant occasion, being the first air show in Chennai in 21 years.
