Taiwan’s President William Lai Asserts Taiwan’s Independence from China

In a recent speech at the Double Ten National Day gala in Taipei, President William Lai of Taiwan declared that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) cannot be considered the “Motherland” of the people of Taiwan. This statement was made during the National Day festivities, which will conclude with a fireworks display in Yunlin County next Thursday night.

President Lai emphasized that the Republic of China (ROC) is firmly rooted in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, and cannot be seen as part of the PRC. He urged people to stand with Taiwan and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for its sovereignty. Lai also advised caution in language when referring to the PRC, especially avoiding terms like “Motherland.”

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to claim it. The Chinese military frequently operates near Taiwan, deploying fighter planes, drones, and navy ships. The median line of the Taiwan Strait, once a tacit border, has seen increased military activity since a visit by former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in August 2022.
