Taiwan’s Defense Minister Warns of Chinese Blockade

On October 23, Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo highlighted the serious global trade repercussions of a potential Chinese blockade of Taiwan. During China’s “Joint Sword-2024B” military exercises, they practiced blockading key ports. Koo explained that such a blockade, as per international law, would prevent all aircraft and ships from entering the area, constituting an act of war under United Nations resolutions.

Global Economic Impact

Koo emphasized that a blockade would significantly affect the global economy, as one-fifth of the world’s freight passes through the Taiwan Strait, valued at approximately USD 2.45 trillion. He stressed that the international community cannot remain passive.

Legislative Discussions and Preparations

The Legislative Yuan’s Foreign and National Defense Committee discussed potential Chinese strategies, including grey zone tactics. Taiwan’s agriculture ministry presented a wartime food plan, securing rice stockpiles for over three months to mitigate risks. Koo also mentioned efforts to ensure the safe supply of essential resources and strengthen cyber defenses.

Taiwan’s Independence and Security

Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te reassured the public of the government’s commitment to protecting democracy and national security amid China’s military exercises.
