Taiwanese Americans for Harris: Concerns Over Trump’s Impact on Taiwan’s Security

Taipei [Taiwan], August 30: Taiwanese Americans for Harris, a grassroots group, believe that a second Trump presidency might put Taiwan’s security at risk. The group’s Co-Chairperson, Jay Chen, stated that President Joe Biden has been the most supportive of Taiwan, while former President Donald Trump has been the most dismissive.

Chen mentioned that Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign is very receptive to the concerns of Taiwanese Americans. The Democratic National Convention has included references to the ‘Six Assurances’ and other policies ensuring peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Some US lawmakers have pledged to support Taiwan regardless of the election outcome. However, Chen warned, ‘There is an enormous risk with a second Trump presidency.’ Trump has questioned US support for Taiwan, claiming it stole America’s chip industry and should pay the US for its defense.

Chen added, ‘Trump has changed the Republican Party from strong interventionism to isolationism. He could upend treaties like the Taiwan Relations Act or the Six Assurances.’ He concluded, ‘A vote for Harris is a vote for security.’

Chen also noted that Taiwanese legislators are diplomatic and attended the Republican convention, but they understand that Trump’s actions do not necessarily mean he has Taiwan’s interests at heart.
