Taiwan Unveils Upgraded T112 Assault Rifles and Bullet-Resistant Panels

In response to rising tensions with China, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has introduced updated T112 assault rifles and redesigned bullet-resistant panels. These advancements were announced by the Armaments Bureau and reported by the Taipei Times.

Improvements in T112 Assault Rifles

The indigenous T112 rifles now feature enhanced triggers and grips, along with a new shell ejection deflection. The rifles, initially showcased at the Taipei International Aerospace and Defense Industry Exhibition as XT112, have been improved based on user feedback. Notable upgrades include a quick detach sling system, a dual-sided design for better close-quarters combat, an extended range from 400m to 600m, and a longer barrel lifespan from 6,000 to 10,000 rounds. Additionally, the rifle’s burst mode has been adjusted from a three-round to a two-round burst, inspired by US battlefield experience.

Advancements in Bullet-Resistant Panels

The bullet-resistant panels have been significantly upgraded to withstand 5.8mm steel core bullets, as explained by researcher Hsu Yen-wei from the Materiel Production Center’s 205th Arsenal in Kaohsiung. Although Taiwan’s military could not acquire the 5.8mm bullets used by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army for testing, they simulated them by altering the velocity of 5.56mm bullets. The new panels, weighing 2.2kg, are slightly heavier than the current 1.9kg panels but offer superior protection.

Production and Deployment

The MND plans to produce approximately 60,000 units of the new bullet-resistant panels in the first batch, scheduled for delivery next year.
