Taiwan Stands Firm Against China’s Pressure on Guatemala Ties

The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has strongly criticized China’s recent comments regarding Taiwan’s diplomatic relationship with Guatemala. China had urged Guatemala to cut ties with Taiwan, reiterating its “One China” policy, which claims Taiwan as part of China. Taiwan’s MOFA dismissed these assertions as ‘absurd’ and accused China of misinterpreting UN Resolution 2758 to support its claims.

During a press conference, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Lin Jian, emphasized the “One China” policy and suggested that establishing relations with China would benefit Guatemala. In response, Taiwan’s MOFA stated that Taiwan is a sovereign state and that the Taiwan Strait’s status quo is recognized internationally, with Taiwan and China not being subordinate to each other.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, is currently visiting Central America and the Caribbean, meeting with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo and Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martinez to celebrate 90 years of friendship. Lin invited President Arevalo to visit Taiwan, highlighting mutual support, including Taiwan’s increased imports of Guatemalan coffee and Guatemala’s support for Taiwan’s WHO membership.
