Increased Chinese Military Activity Near Taiwan
On October 15, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported a significant increase in Chinese military activity near its territory. A total of 153 Chinese military aircraft, 14 naval vessels, and 12 official ships were detected operating around Taiwan until 6 am local time on Tuesday. Of these, 111 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, entering Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the west, southwest, and east.
In response, Taiwan deployed aircraft, naval ships, and coastal-based missile systems to monitor the situation. The Ministry of National Defence shared this information in a post, emphasizing their vigilance and response to the incursions.
China’s Military Drills and Taiwan’s Response
China’s actions are part of a broader pattern of provocations that have intensified since September 2020, using gray zone tactics to pressure Taiwan without direct force. Recently, China conducted large-scale military drills, simulating strikes on sea and land targets around Taiwan. These exercises, named ‘Joint Sword 2024B,’ were described by China’s Eastern Theater Command as a test of joint operations capabilities and a warning against Taiwan’s independence efforts.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned these drills, accusing China of undermining regional peace and stability. They urged the international community to recognize China’s expansionist nature and support Taiwan’s democracy. The Ministry called for unity in defending freedom and democracy in the Indo-Pacific region.
