On July 31, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te accused the Chinese government of misinterpreting a United Nations resolution to justify its military activities against Taiwan. He condemned China for inaccurately interpreting UN Resolution 2758 and linking it to its ‘One China’ principle. Lai made these remarks at the annual summit of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) in Taipei.

Lai stated that China’s actions aim to create a legal basis for military aggression against Taiwan and obstruct Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. China claims that the UN resolution confirms its one-China principle, which implies that Taiwan is part of China. However, Taiwan has been governed independently since 1949, despite China’s insistence on eventual reunification.

Following Lai’s remarks, IPAC adopted a ‘model resolution’ to counter China’s interpretation. The resolution calls for members to pass resolutions in their parliaments to address China’s ‘distortion’ of the UN resolution. IPAC emphasized that the UN resolution does not establish the One China Principle or prevent Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

The cross-national parliamentarians’ group stressed that the UN document does not affect the sovereign choices of other countries regarding their relationship with Taiwan. They expressed support for Taiwan’s participation in UN agencies. The IPAC summit saw participation from 49 members of legislatures from 23 countries and the European Parliament. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that IPAC has over 250 members worldwide.
