Taiwan Monitors Chinese Military Activity Near Its Borders
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) has reported increased Chinese military activity around Taiwan. On Friday, they detected eight aircraft from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), nine vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and one official ship operating near Taiwan until 6 am (UTC+8). Four of these aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern and southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The Ministry has been monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.
China has been increasing its military presence around Taiwan since September 2020, using tactics to achieve its security objectives. On Thursday, the Taiwanese MND also reported five PLA aircraft, nine PLAN vessels, and one official ship, with nine aircraft crossing the median line into Taiwan’s ADIZ.
In response to these activities, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te held a national security conference, reassuring the public of the government’s commitment to safeguarding Taiwan’s democracy and security. This comes after China’s announcement of military drills named “Joint Sword-2024B” in the Taiwan Strait, which were described as a warning to those supporting Taiwan’s independence.
