Taiwan Monitors Chinese Military Activity Amid Rising Tensions
On November 5, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence reported increased Chinese military activity near Taiwan. A total of 20 aircraft from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and six vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) were detected around Taiwan. Notably, 16 of these aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ).
The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and responding as needed. Since September 2020, China has intensified its military presence around Taiwan, employing grey zone tactics to achieve its security goals. In response to these activities, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te held a national security conference, reassuring the public of the government’s commitment to safeguarding Taiwan’s democracy and security.
President Lai also attended a keel-laying ceremony for a new light frigate prototype for the Taiwanese Navy, marking a significant step in Taiwan’s self-defense and defense industry development. This event was shared by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence on social media.
The recent increase in Chinese military maneuvers has raised concerns over regional stability, with Taiwan’s defense forces enhancing airspace security. The Taiwan Strait remains a hotspot for tensions, as China continues to assert its claims over Taiwan, which has been self-governed since 1949. Despite China’s insistence on reunification, Taiwan receives diplomatic support from the United States and other allies.
