Taiwan Monitors Chinese Military Activity Near Island
On Sunday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported the presence of Chinese military forces near the island. By 6 am local time, eight Chinese aircraft and seven naval vessels were detected in the area. Notably, six of these aircraft crossed the median line, entering Taiwan’s northern and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response, Taiwan is closely monitoring the situation and has taken necessary actions.
Earlier, the MND had detected twenty-two Chinese aircraft and five naval vessels, with sixteen aircraft crossing the median line into Taiwan’s ADIZ. Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, reassured the public of the government’s commitment to defending the island’s democracy and national security. This statement followed a high-level national security meeting in response to China’s military exercises, named “Joint Sword-2024B,” in the Taiwan Strait.
The ongoing military activities are part of the tensions between Taiwan and China. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory and aims for reunification, potentially by force.
