Taiwan Monitors Chinese Military Activity Near Island
On October 26, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported significant Chinese military activity near the island. By 6 am local time, 22 Chinese aircraft and five naval vessels were detected in the region. Notably, 16 of these aircraft crossed the median line, entering Taiwan’s northern and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). Taiwan is closely monitoring the situation and has taken appropriate measures.
In a statement, the MND shared, “22 PLA aircraft and 5 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 16 of the aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern and southwestern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded accordingly.”
The day before, China had sent four aircraft and four naval vessels around Taiwan, with two aircraft crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan’s military also reported the transit of United States and Canadian naval vessels through the Taiwan Strait on October 20.
Earlier this week, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te reassured the public of the government’s commitment to defending Taiwan’s democracy and national security. This followed China’s announcement of military drills named “Joint Sword-2024B” in the Taiwan Strait, described as a “stern warning” to advocates of Taiwan independence.
The ongoing military activity is part of the tensions between Taiwan and China. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China views it as part of its territory and insists on eventual reunification, potentially by force.
