Taiwan Monitors Chinese Aircraft and Ships Near Its Territory
On August 24, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence reported that 38 Chinese aircraft and 12 Chinese vessels were detected around Taiwan’s territory by 6 a.m. The Ministry stated that 32 of these aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s Eastern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). Taiwan monitored the situation and responded accordingly.
Earlier on August 23, the Ministry detected 41 Chinese aircraft and seven vessels around its territory. Similarly, 32 of these aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s ADIZ. Taiwan’s Armed Forces monitored and responded to the situation.
These incidents are part of a series of increased military activities by China around Taiwan in recent months. China has been conducting regular air and naval incursions into Taiwan’s ADIZ and military exercises near the island. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China considers it part of its territory and aims for reunification, potentially by force. This month alone, Taiwan has tracked over 300 Chinese aircraft and around 200 ships. Since September 2020, China has been using grey zone tactics by gradually increasing its military presence around Taiwan.
