On October 6th, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath Peetham, arrived in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He visited the Lingaraj Temple and emphasized the cultural significance of cows in India, urging the government to remove cows from the list of animals, as they are considered deities in Indian culture.

Advocacy for Cow Protection

Swami Avimukteshwaranand is on a mission called the Gau Pratishtha Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra, advocating for the protection of cows. He has previously organized events like the Gau Pratishthan Andolan and Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra in Lakshmanpur. He expressed concerns over cow slaughter, highlighting it as a threat to Indian culture and identity.

Call for Legal Reforms

The Shankaracharya criticized the lack of government action in protecting cows, despite the cultural reverence for them. He called for a nationwide law to stop cow slaughter, noting that while some states have anti-cow slaughter laws, others still permit it. He plans to visit 35 states to promote cow protection.

Celebration of Cultural Traditions

Earlier, on August 6th, the 55th Prakatotsav of Jyotirmath’s 55th Shankaracharya was celebrated in Delhi with the Gopratishtha Festival. The event featured the unique Tuladan tradition and was attended by prominent politicians and scholars.
