Suryakumar Yadav Named New T20I Captain for India’s Tour of Sri Lanka
Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain of India’s T20I team for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The tour, starting on July 27, will feature three T20Is and ODIs. This will be India’s first series under new head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Expressing his excitement, Suryakumar Yadav shared on Instagram, “Thank you so much for outpouring love, support and best wishes from you. The last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful. Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words. This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings. All fame reaches God, God is great.”
Since his international debut at the age of 30, Suryakumar has become one of India’s top white-ball players, especially in T20Is. In 68 matches, he has scored 2,340 runs at an average of 43.33 and a strike rate of 167.74, with four centuries and 19 fifties. He was also part of India’s 2024 ICC T20 World Cup-winning team.
Suryakumar has captained India in seven T20Is against Australia and South Africa, winning five and losing just two.
