Suryakumar Yadav Matches Virat Kohli’s Record in T20I Cricket

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has made history by matching Virat Kohli’s record of 16 Player of the Match (POTM) awards in T20I cricket. This achievement came after Suryakumar’s outstanding performance in the series opener against Sri Lanka, where he scored 58 runs off just 26 balls, leading India to a 43-run victory.

Despite the pressure of captaincy, Suryakumar maintained his dynamic style of play, achieving a strike rate of 223.08. This was his 16th POTM award in 69 matches, equaling Kohli’s record, who achieved the same in 125 matches.

Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza is close behind with 15 POTM awards in 91 matches. Kohli retired from T20I cricket after a match-winning performance in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, where he scored 76 runs off 59 balls, helping India win the title and ending a 13-year ICC World Cup trophy drought.

In the absence of Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja, India’s young players stepped up, scoring 213/7 against Sri Lanka. Although Sri Lanka started strong, India’s Arshdeep Singh’s breakthrough led to a collapse in the Sri Lankan batting lineup. India will face Sri Lanka in the second T20I on Sunday.
