Suryakumar Yadav Aims for Indian Test Team Spot
Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav, known for his T20I performances, has expressed his desire to earn a spot in the Indian Test team. Despite being a regular in India’s white-ball setup, Suryakumar has played only one Test match, scoring eight runs against Australia in February 2023.
India is scheduled to play 10 Test matches over the next few months. Suryakumar acknowledges the competition for a spot, with players like Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, and Rajat Patidar also in the fray. He said, “There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again.”
The 33-year-old cricketer will return to red-ball cricket in the Duleep Trophy for his home side Mumbai and will also participate in the Buchi Babu tournament. Suryakumar is focused on making a positive impact in these domestic tournaments. He stated, “Going forward, if I have to play, then I will automatically play. That is not in my control. What is in my power right now is to play the Buchi Babu tournament, go on to play the Duleep Trophy and then see what happens.”
In his first-class career, Suryakumar has scored 5,628 runs in 82 matches with an average of 43.62, including 14 centuries. He emphasized that red-ball cricket has always been his priority, saying, “When I grew up in the maidans (grounds) of Mumbai and played a lot of local cricket, I started playing with the red cherry. The love for the longest format began there, and has always been there.”
He concluded by expressing his excitement for the upcoming Test matches, stating, “There are ten Test matches lined up and I’m obviously excited for some red-ball fun.”
