Supreme Court Urges Action on Human and Sex Trafficking in India
The Supreme Court of India has expressed concern over the lack of a comprehensive rehabilitation framework for victims of human and sex trafficking. Justices JB Pardiwala and Pankaj Mithal emphasized the urgent need for the Union to address this issue, highlighting the severe impact on victims, particularly women and children. The court noted that trafficking victims face physical and mental abuse, leading to serious health issues and social alienation.
The court stressed the importance of legislative measures to provide care, protection, and rehabilitation for victims. It called for a human rights and rehabilitative approach, urging the creation of a supportive legal, economic, and social environment. The court was reviewing compliance with a 2015 order regarding the formation of the Organised Crime Investigating Agency and strengthening victim protection protocols.
The Centre has been given three weeks to file a fresh affidavit outlining steps to address the issue, including the rise in cyber-enabled sex trafficking. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on December 10.
