Supreme Court Upholds Cancellation of UGC-NET 2024 Exam Due to Paper Leak

The Supreme Court of India has decided not to interfere with the Central government’s decision to cancel the UGC-NET 2024 exam due to alleged paper leaks. The exam, which was initially held on June 18, was canceled on June 19 and is now rescheduled for August 21.

Details of the Court’s Decision

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra noted that entertaining the plea to challenge the cancellation at this stage would add to uncertainty and chaos. The bench emphasized that nine lakh candidates are set to appear for the rescheduled exam on August 21, and the students need certainty.

Government’s Actions

The Central government canceled the exam following allegations of a question paper leak and referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation. The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to stay the re-examination until the CBI completes its inquiry.

Importance of UGC-NET

The UGC-NET exam is crucial as it determines the eligibility of candidates for research opportunities, including Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF).
