Supreme Court Upholds Bail for Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren in Land Scam Case

The Supreme Court of India has provided significant relief to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren by rejecting the Directorate of Enforcement’s (ED) plea to cancel his bail. The court stated that the Jharkhand High Court’s decision to grant bail was well-reasoned.

Supreme Court’s Decision

A bench of justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan declared, “We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order.” The court emphasized that the observations made regarding bail would not influence the trial judge during the trial or any other proceedings.

Background of the Case

Hemant Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was arrested in January on charges related to an alleged land scam and money laundering. The investigation involves the forgery of official records to acquire large parcels of land worth crores.

Return to Office

Following his release on bail, Soren resumed his role as Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He won a vote of trust in the state assembly with the support of 45 MLAs. Soren was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on July 4.

Political Context

In a video message, Soren accused the BJP of making false allegations against him. He stated, “In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, the people of Jharkhand gave our party mandate but the conspirators were unable to digest how an Adivasi youngster can sit in such a high position.”

Hemant Soren’s return as Chief Minister is expected to strengthen the JMM, which won three seats in the tribal-dominated state of Jharkhand in the Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, JMM, in alliance with the Congress and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), secured a comfortable majority in the state assembly.
