Supreme Court Suggests Women’s Reservation in Delhi High Court Bar Association
The Supreme Court of India has asked the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) to consider reserving posts for women, including the Treasurer position. This direction came from a bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan while hearing a plea demanding women’s reservation in the DHCBA.
The court suggested that the General Body of the DHCBA also consider reserving another office bearer post for women. The petitions were filed by advocates Aditi Chaudhary and Shobha Gupta, who challenged a Delhi High Court order dated September 11, 2024, which declined to grant interim relief for women’s representation in the Bar Association.
Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora, along with other advocates, represented Aditi Chaudhary, while Senior Advocate Mohit Mathur appeared for the DHCBA. The next hearing is scheduled for November 27, 2024.
The petition highlighted that since 1962, there has not been a single woman president or secretary in the DHCBA. It also noted that the Supreme Court Bar Association reserves 1/3rd of its Executive Committee seats and one Office Bearer post for women, with the Treasurer position reserved for women in the 2024-25 elections.
