Supreme Court Stops Tamil Nadu Police from Acting Against Isha Yoga Centre

Supreme Court Halts Police Action Against Isha Yoga Centre

The Supreme Court of India has stopped the Tamil Nadu police from taking further action against the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore, led by spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev. This decision came after the Madras High Court had directed the police to investigate the center.

Background of the Case

A father, S Kamaraj, filed a habeas corpus petition claiming his daughters were being held against their will at the center. However, the daughters, aged 32 and 49, appeared before the High Court and stated they were staying there voluntarily.

Supreme Court’s Decision

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, transferred the case to the Supreme Court. The court ordered the police not to take any further action based on the High Court’s directions and asked for a status report.

Reactions and Statements

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the Isha Foundation, argued against the police’s actions, which were supported by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. The Supreme Court interacted with the sisters, who confirmed their voluntary stay at the ashram.

The court noted that the women have been at the ashram since 2009 and have been in contact with their family. The police have since left the ashram.
