Supreme Court Stops Name Display Rule for Shops During Kanwar Yatra

Tika Ram Jully Criticizes BJP

The Supreme Court has temporarily stopped a rule that required shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their names. This decision came after several petitions challenged the directive issued by the Senior Superintendent of Police in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

Tika Ram Jully, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He said, “The BJP government does not take decisions in accordance with the Constitution. That is the reason why the Supreme Court had to intervene and give instructions.”

Jully also accused the BJP of dividing people based on sect and religion.

On Monday, a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, stating that state police cannot force shopkeepers to display their names. Instead, they can only be asked to display the food items they are selling.

The matter will be heard again on July 26.
