Supreme Court Stops Karnataka’s Half-Yearly Exam Results for Classes 8, 9, and 10

Supreme Court Stops Karnataka’s Half-Yearly Exam Results for Classes 8, 9, and 10

Supreme Court Halts Karnataka’s Half-Yearly Exam Results

Background

The Supreme Court of India has ordered that the results of half-yearly exams for classes eight, nine, and ten in Karnataka should not be released until further notice. This decision was made by a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma.

Reason for the Decision

The court was hearing a plea against the Karnataka government’s decision to conduct board exams for classes 5, 8, 9, and 11. The court was surprised to learn about the half-yearly board exam for Class 10, noting that such exams do not exist in other states and should not happen. The court described it as an “ego issue” by the state.

Karnataka Government’s Response

The Karnataka government explained that the exams were introduced due to declining student marks and promised to file an affidavit to explain further. The court has given them time to do so but has ordered that the results should not be declared in the meantime.

Previous Developments

Previously, the Karnataka government had informed the court that the notification for board exams for classes 5, 8, 9, and 11 had been withdrawn. However, advocate K.V. Dhananjay argued that this withdrawal was not fully implemented, affecting only seven districts and excluding the 10th standard.

Court’s Suggestions

The court suggested that Karnataka should focus on opening good schools and providing quality education to secure a bright future for its students.
